DIY Flocked Christmas Tree {A Tutorial}

I’ve wanted a flocked Christmas tree FOREVER.When I was a little girl my Grandma always had a flocked tree with only blue and green lights and bulbs. I wanted to re-create an updated version of the same.

As I shopped the after Christmas sales last year I discovered these trees were expensive. Talk about sticker shock! Being I wasn’t up for spending $500 buckaroos on a tree, I began a mission to figure out how to do it myself.

Start with an artificial tree, preferably one you get for FREE on Craigslist.

Step #1: Working in sections, lightly spray paint the tops of the branches with white spray paint (I used the cheapest spray paint I could find, $1 at Walmart). Don’t spray underneath the branches. You are trying to achieve a snow-fallen look.

Step #2: Add snow to the branches while the spray paint is wet. It won’t all stick but some will.

FLOCKING TIP: I did these first 2 steps in the garage (thankfully it was in the 50′s). It was pretty messy. After spray painting your tree, move it inside to the spot you are going to use it. I felt it was important to get the lights on before continuing the process; I didn’t want adding the lights to ruin the rest of my work!

Step #3: Add lights. I stocked up on white lights after Christmas last year. I wanted to get as much white going for me as possible. I like to wrap the lights around the inside of the tree, then working towards the outside. This gives the tree a beautiful ‘glow’.

(I know she isn’t looking great, yet…be patient!)

Step #4: A real flocked tree has chunky white branches. To create that look I painted the tips of the branches with white paint (I just used what I had on hand).

Step #5: Add more snow onto the wet paint as you go.

Step #6: If you are adding garland, do it before you add your ornaments. I used Burlap Garland to add a natural element  to contrast all the shine and glitter I planned to use.  I got mine for $8.99 (10 foot roll) at JoAnne Fabrics.

Step #7: Now for the fun part – ORNAMENTS!

I LOVE giant ornaments, how about you?

Love you more than having a tree that reminds me of my wonderful Grandmother in heaven,
